How One of Hamburg’s Highest-Revenue Product Organizations Grew Without Textbook PM – and What We Can Learn from It

In the eighteenth episode of the PRODUKTKRAFT Podcast, I talk to Jonas Franke, co-founder and CPO of Pirate Ship. Pirate Ship is one of the leading shipping platforms in the US, serves millions of active users, and has grown purely organically into one of the largest product organizations in Hamburg – without external funding, without classic PM frameworks, and without the toolkit we know from textbooks.

What’s interesting about it: what was missing at the beginning wasn’t the substance of good product work, just a name for it. Because the culture that makes for strong product management – extreme trust within the founding team, the courage to make decisions late and to deliberately not do things, and an environment without meeting overhead – was there from the start. Product, business, and design came together in one head, engineering initially worked as an executing workbench, and a single founder was the central nexus between all functional areas of the company.

We talk about why this setup worked at first – and why at some point it couldn’t work anymore. How do you translate a recipe for success that grew within a small founding team for a growing organization? How do you unlearn things that were once right?

Jonas takes us into the reality of a company that set itself few goals in the classic sense, where the founding team didn’t constantly look at numbers – and that nevertheless, with millions of users, has become one of the highest-revenue product organizations in Hamburg, through organic growth. A conversation about the power of culture and the strength of capacity constraints.

Have a listen to the eighteenth episode of the PRODUKTKRAFT Podcast to find out what happens when product management doesn’t come from the textbook – but from mindset.
